Background

Woodhouse Smart RouteThe Woodhouse route includes some of the busiest roads in Sheffield, such as Attercliffe Road and Staniforth Road. They provide essential access to the city from Sheffield’s southern and eastern residential areas. This is an important bus route and close to 1,000 bus journeys are made along this route every day.

The overall aims of the proposals are to:

  • Reduce delays for all road users by tackling congestion hotspots.
  • Help to improve air quality and road safety.
  • Support regeneration projects along the corridors by improving accessibility.
  • Improve the reliability and punctuality of bus journeys.

This will be achieved by:

  • improving junction layouts.
  • resolving parking issues.
  • improving traffic signal technology

What is RID technology?

Real Time Intelligent Detection (RID) technology allows buses approaching traffic lights to be detected through the use of a Global Positioning System (GPS). If a bus service that has RID installed is running behind schedule then it receives a green light, reducing delays and helping to make sure that the bus arrives on time.
