Smart Routes are designed to:

• improve the road for all road users
  
  
• protect against worsening congestion
  
  
• provide better transport options for everyone.

This Smart Route includes:

General traffic would benefit from improved junctions and new traffic signal technology, which would reduce delay and congestion at key locations such as Leppings Lane and the Hillsborough Barracks;

Bus passengers would benefit from improved reliability and reduced journey times as a result of new bus lanes. The proposed length of the bus lanes has been reduced following feedback during the first phase of consultation. These would be introduced alongside the existing carriageway and could also be used by cyclists, taxis and motorcyclists. All these vehicles would be removed from general traffic, thus helping to reduce congestion for everyone. Better facilities would also be provided at bus stops;

Pedestrians would benefit from improved crossing facilities along the route.
