Project Update - March 2011 In February 2011 the Council was informed that, due to widely publicised reductions in future government expenditure, the Department for Transport will not be able to fund any of the Smart Route improvements until 2015 at the earliest. The department recognised the benefits of the project and their value for money but was looking for cost savings: we were unable to offer substantial cost savings beyond those contained in our original submission. This is obviously disappointing news but the Council is committed to potentially identifying other potential funding sources that may allow for these proposals to be introduced in the future. In particular, the Council recognises the strategic importance of the areas around Penistone Road and is committed to making improvements, where possible, that are designed to help promote economic growth and encourage the creation of new job opportunities. Council's Cabinet has considered proposals to improve travel along Penistone Road On 9 December 2009, the Cabinet of Sheffield City Council approved a report that provided a detailed update on plans to improve this busy stretch of the A61.The report included how consultation with local residents, businesses and commuters is helping to shape these plans. The Cabinet also agreed to make a funding bid to the Department for Transport. This is a first stage (or ‘Programme Entry’) bid.
