Background
As part of the A61, the road provides one of the main access routes further north to the M1, Barnsley and Leeds. Penistone Road – Today and Tomorrow Penistone Road is the second busiest road into Sheffield, after the Parkway, with 60,000 journeys each weekday. The road is one of the most congested in Sheffield. Three congestion ‘hotspots’ along the road were highlighted as a priority by Sheffield residents in the Sheffield City Council survey ‘Driving Me Crazy’ in August 2008. It is also one of highest priority routes for tackling congestion in South Yorkshire (South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan). This congestion is expected to get worse over the coming years as the city centre and the Upper Don Valley are developed and more jobs are created. This will mean that more people will travel to, from and through the area. This could cause further delays, reduce road safety and aggravate air quality problems. The new Penistone Road Smart Route is designed to deal with these problems.
