Our Proposals
The proposals detailed here are based on feedback from local residents, businesses and commuters. They are designed to improve travel for all road users, as well as benefit local residents.
Improving Ecclesall Road remains a priority of Sheffield City Council and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. Following recent government spending reviews, several of the proposed improvements shown are now dependent on the availability of funding over the next few years.

On the approaches to Moore Street roundabout from Hanover Way and Charter Row, we have widened the lanes on the approach to the roundabout to help queuing at the roundabout.

To reduce queues for all vehicles approaching Moore Street roundabout, we propose to change lane markings on this approach and on the roundabout itself. This would make it easier for all traffic to move into the correct lane and travel around the roundabout.

Outside Network Q we have widened the road to allow traffic to pass through the area quicker.

A new Marks and Spencer store is currently being built. As part of the development, a new pedestrian crossing is to be introduced outside the store, providing a safe crossing point for all pedestrians and better access to other local shops and bus stops.

Extending the right-turn lane into Collegiate Crescent will allow traffic to flow easier past this busy junction. We will also be moving the inbound bus stop further along Ecclesall Road to stop buses from blocking the junction.

Improved pedestrian crossing facilities are proposed on all sides of the roundabout, widening the islands to make more space for pedestrians crossing. We are also considering moving the crossings slightly so that traffic is less likely to queue back onto the roundabout.

We are looking at widening the lanes on the roundabout and making the roundabout at Hunter's Bar smaller to enable more vehicles to use it at the same time and help to reduce queues on all approaches to the roundabout. We will be careful to make sure that the heritage and pleasant look of the roundabout is maintained.

Hunter's Bar is one of the busiest junctions in Sheffield. We propose to remove the inbound bus lane section of the roundabout, allowing vehicles to use all three lane approaches to the roundabout. We also propose to remove the outbound bus lane from Hunter's Bar Roundabout towards Rustlings Road, so that vehicles would not have to quickly merge into one lane.

It was hoped to widen Ecclesall Road slightly between Rustlings Road and Greystones Road to allow larger vehicles to pass parked cars. However, the change in kerb location would involve significant and expensive utility diversions. Reduced budgets mean that it is no longer proposed to widen the road at this time.

We propose to make the outside lane right-turn only into Greystones Road, meaning right turning vehicles would no longer block traffic continuing along Ecclesall Road. In order to achieve this, the current single yellow line on the outbound side of Ecclesall Road South would need to be made a double yellow line.

By reducing the length of the outbound bus lane, all traffic would benefit from a longer two lane approach to the busy junction with Psalter Lane.

Moving the bus stop at this location slightly inbound would allow traffic to flow more freely by reducing the frequency that a stopped bus blocks other traffic.

Although we are proposing to improve the majority of right turns off Ecclesall Road South in this location we have looked at suggestions to improve right turns on to the road by introducing mini-roundabouts. These would significantly affect traffic flow along the road and as such will not be introduced.

The outside lanes on the approach to Ringinglow Road and Gisborne Road could be made right-turn only, meaning right turning vehicles would no longer block traffic continuing along Ecclesall Road. The current single yellow line on the outbound side of Ecclesall Road South would need to be made a double yellow line.

At the junction with Knowle Lane, a new bus shelter will be provided closer to the road, allowing people to wait in more comfort and still see approaching buses. We plan to improve the appearance of the existing shelter which will be kept as a historical landmark.

Earlier consultation at Bents Green showed that the majority of respondents were in favour of improvements within the local shopping area. Reductions in the project budget mean that these changes can no longer be carried out as part of the Smart Route. However, the South West Community Assembly has been approached to see if they can fund all or some parts of the scheme.
