Feedback

Between May and July 2009 the Ecclesall Road Smart Route project began by asking for your views on current travel problems along Ecclesall Road.

The response was encouraging, with people taking time to either fill in the online form or return a completed wraparound. We also received a number of emails, letters, SMS text messages and calls to the information line from people who wanted to provide their views.

All comments have been carefully considered and analysed and have been used by Sheffield City Council and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to develop more detailed proposals to improve travel along this busy corridor.

What you said

Respondents were asked if they agreed with the principles of the Ecclesall Road Smart Route and proposals to provide improvements at the key locations highlighted in the consultation materials:

  • 72.9% said yes.
  • 13.1% said no.
  • 14% said they did not know because they needed more information.

The main reasons respondents supported the proposals were to:

  • Reduce congestion and delays, 36.3%
  • Address the highlighted problem areas {insert link to map}, 15.9%
  • Improve public transport, 10.5%
  • Generally improve travelling along the corridor, 10.2%
  • Improve road safety, 7.4%

Respondents were also given the opportunity to comment on the key locations along the corridor (see key problem areas) that they would like to see improved. The most frequently mentioned locations were:

    Hunters Bar

  • Hunters Bar, 20.9%
  • Huntingtower Road to Carterknowle Road, 18.3%
  • Moore Street roundabout, 13%

  • Where Bents Road meets Ecclesall Road South, 9%
  • Bents Green, 6.7%
  • Summerfield Street, 4.9%
  • Berkley Precinct, 4.1%

As well as specific locations along Ecclesall Road, a number of other issues were highlighted as being in need of improvement. The most frequently raised issues included:

  • Improvements for pedestrians (i.e. improved pedestrian crossings, better pavement surfaces).
  • Improving and regulating parking provision (i.e. stricter enforcement, better provision for the disabled).
  • Improving cycling facilities.
  • Improving traffic management along the route.
  • Improving bus travel.
  • Improving highway enforcement.

What happens next

Following feedback from local residents, businesses and commuters in the first phase of consultation, our priority now is to begin developing more detailed proposals for improving Ecclesall Road, particularly on each of the key locations.

We will again be asking for your feedback in order to help us design the best possible plans before any work begins along the corridor.
