Planner's BlogUnderstanding the work of the transport planner

Everyone has views on how we can improve our roads in Sheffield. What many people don’t understand is what goes on behind the scenes and the really difficult issues that have to be considered when trying to improve our transport network.

This blog has been set up to shed some light on how different teams work together to develop ideas and proposals to improve our road network. Some of the issues are obvious; other things we have to think about may surprise you.

Every couple of weeks we will keep you updated on the work that is been carried out to develop proposals to improve travel along Ecclesall Road. As key decisions are made and as consultation continues, the Blog will keep you updated with what is going on.

You can comment on the blog by emailing ecclesallroad@smartroutes.co.uk.

25th January 2010

Approximately six weeks ago we introduced detailed proposals for improvements in the Bents Green area, and we encouraged you to have your say to help us develop final proposals which will then be put forward to councillors for approval.

A leaflet was sent out to properties in and around the area, while a number of local Community Access Points displayed copies of the leaflet for those who travel through the area and may not have received it through their door. We also updated the Ecclesall Road Smart Route website, encouraging further responses.

As well as this, on Wednesday 13 January between 2pm and 8pm, we hosted a drop-in session at Bents Green Methodist Church. The event proved very successful with over 60 people attending to view the exhibitions and talk to the project team about how they felt we could improve travel in and around the area. Thanks to everyone who took their time to come and speak to us, it certainly proved very useful to the team.

All the views, issues and priorities received over the consultation period are now being carefully considered as we develop the final proposals.

Again, if you have any questions or comments please get in touch. You can email us at ecclesallroad@smartroutes.co.uk or call the information line on 0845 303 0343.

9th December 2009

Back in May we introduced the first phase of the Ecclesall Road Smart Route consultation. This consultation introduced our initial ideas and asked you where you think improvements along Ecclesall Road are necessary.

Following detailed analysis of public feedback by the project team and planners, we are now ready to get the second phase of consultation underway. This involves asking the public for their views on more detailed proposals for improvement, starting with the Bents Green area and the junction where Bents Road meets Ecclesall Road South.

The proposals have been developed following valuable public feedback in the first phase of consultation, and a leaflet has now been sent out to all properties nearby to the proposed improvements. The leaflet shows detailed proposals for the area and, as with the first phase of consultation, includes a response form for you to have your say.

The leaflet is also being made available at a number of Community Access Points along Ringinglow Road and Ecclesall Road South. These are listed below:

  • A1 Sound
  • G E Spink
  • GT News
  • Rowlands Pharmacy
  • The Prince Of Wales
  • The Toby Carvery
  • CPV Dental Care
  • National Co-Op
  • Tompkins Hair and Nail Studio

You can also have your say by filling in the response form on this website by clicking here.

The consultation ends on 22 January 2010 following which we will once again look at your views and priorities before presenting final proposals to local councillors and then putting a work programme together.

If you have any queries, suggestions or would like further information, please call the dedicated information line on 0845 303 0343 or email us at ecclesallroad@smartroutes.co.uk.

1st September 2009

To improve road safety along Ecclesall Road, maintenance work to enhance the quality of the carriageway is now underway between Hunters Bar and Rosedale Road. Other improvements are also taking place, including dropped kerbs and tactile paving to make it easier for pedestrians to cross at junctions.

As part of this ongoing maintenance work, Ecclesall Road will be closed inbound from Hunters Bar to Broomgrove Road on the following:

  • 7pm until midnight, Monday 7th September to Thursday 10th September.
  • 7:30am until 5pm, Sunday 13th September.
  • 7pm until midnight, Monday 14th September to Thursday 17th September.

During these times all inbound bus services will divert via Sharrow Vale Road and Cemetery Road. All normal inbound traffic will be diverted via Brocco Bank and Clarkehouse Road. Individual road closure arrangements for side roads are still to be confirmed.

Passengers are asked to use bus stops on the opposite side of Hunters Bar, or on Cemetery Road. All outbound services will continue to run as usual.

The services that will be affected by the closures are as follows:

Evenings (7th September – 10th September and 14th September – 17th September):

  • First services 81, 82, 85, 86 and 272.
  • Stagecoach services 83 and 88.
  • TM Travel service 272.

Daytime (Sunday 13th September):

  • First services 81, 82, 85, 86 and 272.
  • Stagecoach service 284.
  • TM Travel service 215.

While the works are separate to the Ecclesall Road Smart Route, Sheffield City Council wanted to make sure you were kept up to date to ensure that any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum.

If you have any further enquiries about the maintenance work or road closure, please call the StreetForce Information Line on 0114 273 4567.

30th July 2009

You may have noticed that yellow signs have appeared along Ecclesall Road to let you know of some upcoming maintenance work. This is scheduled to take place from the beginning of August until November 2009. This maintenance work was referred to in the consultation materials and letters that were distributed in early May. This first stage of work will involve resurfacing Ecclesall Road between Hunters Bar and Rosedale Road. The second stage involves the section between Summerfield Street and Rosedale Road. This is due to be undertaken in early 2010.

The works will involve resurfacing which will improve the overall quality of the carriageway, in particular the skid resistance, which will benefit road safety for all those who use Ecclesall Road.

Other improvements, including dropped kerbs and tactile paving to help pedestrians crossing at junctions, will be done at the same time.

This maintenance work is separate to the Ecclesall Road Smart Route but Sheffield City Council wanted to let you know that plans are currently being finalised to ensure that any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum.

All work will be off-peak, with the work on dropped kerbs and tactile paving to start in the first week of August. An exact date for the resurfacing work will be announced soon, with further details to be posted on www.sheffield.gov.uk and on this website.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about the maintenance work please call the StreetForce Information Line on 0114 273 4567.

26th June 2009

There are now less than ten days left for you to have your say during the first phase of consultation for proposed improvements along the Ecclesall Road Smart Route.

The consultation ends on July 3rd 2009, so we are keen for you to continue sending in your comments. These will help us to develop the best possible solutions along this busy corridor.

Copies of the newspaper wraparound are still available in many of the community access points along the corridor. You can also fill in the online response form quickly and easily on this website.

As with previous blog entries there continues to be strong support for the proposals, with 75.1% of respondents currently in favour of providing improvements along Ecclesall Road. The main reason for this support has been to reduce congestion and delays.

Once the consultation ends the project team will carefully consider and analyse all comments received before creating a report that will be used to help develop more detailed proposals.

Again, if you have any questions or comments please get in touch. You can email us at ecclesallroad@smartroutes.co.uk or call the information line on 0845 303 0343.

15th June 2009

There’s still time to have your say about Ecclesall Road

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions about the Ecclesall Road Smart Route. We have now extended the consultation period to 3rd July 2009, to allow as many people as possible to have their say about their experiences when using Ecclesall Road.

We have received hundreds of responses from the newspaper wraparound and online response form, as well as receiving comments via email, text message, the telephone information line and the Facebook group.

In line with the last blog post, 76.6% of respondents are in favour of providing improvements along the route and at the key locations identified. The majority of other respondents feel unable to comment until more detailed proposals have been developed in the coming months.

We would like to thank you for your feedback so far; this will help us to develop the best possible solutions for everyone who lives, works, visits and travels through the area.

If you have any queries, suggestions or would like further information, please call the dedicated information line on 0845 303 0343 or email us at ecclesallroad@smartroutes.co.uk.

27th May 2009

The consultation is now well underway, with materials available throughout Sheffield. This includes:

  • a newspaper wraparound, which was sent out with the Gazette on 7th May to over 56,000 households;
  • information has been sent out in the post to local residents and businesses;
  • over 100 local shops and amenities are providing feedback opportunities for the public;
  • posters are now on buses, advertising the consultation and the TxtYourViews service; and
  • exhibition sites along the route are providing further information for the public.

This website has proved particularly popular, as has the opportunity to talk directly to the project team by calling the Information Line (0845 303 0343).

We are now beginning to receive your responses, with many of you getting in touch to provide important insights into the problems you experience when using Ecclesall Road. While we are currently very early in the consultation, around 75% of respondents are in favour of making improvements along the corridor. Many of the remaining 25% would like to see proposals before making a judgment. Proposals will be developed once we have considered your issues, views and priorities for improvement.

If you still want to have your say, please click here and fill in the online response form.

At the start of this consultation, we also went along to the Sheffield On The Move Forum on 23rd April 2009. We began by speaking with local people about Ecclesall Road, and the problems they experienced along the route. This event was particularly useful for informing initial ideas and giving us an indication of some of your issues and priorities. We would like to thank everyone who came along and had their say.

We have also been invited to the Motorists Forum on 16th July 2009 where we will be talking about the Ecclesall Road Smart Route and the consultation. We also hope to identify common problems motorists experience and how we can balance the priorities of all road users.

We will continue to keep you updated on our progress. In the meantime, if you want to have your say, now is your chance to tell us your views.

7th May 2009

After months of preparation, today we launched the first stage of public consultation which will help us to develop the Ecclesall Road Smart Route. We’ve posted the press release online.

This is a major milestone in this important project as the public can give us their feedback about where they think improvements along Ecclesall Road are necessary. Unlike some consultations, we are asking for the public’s views before we make any decisions on what changes, if any, we might suggest along the corridor. The online response form includes questions which will give us important information about the public’s priorities.

The next few weeks will be interesting as we start to receive responses. In the meantime we need to continue to prepare the transport models which will be used to test different road layouts to see which work best. Transport modelling is ridiculously complicated….some might say tediously boring. That said if you are interested in learning more you might like to visit www.transportmodeller.com.

We will update this blog once responses start coming in. In the meantime, if you want to have your say about how to improve Ecclesall Road, now is the chance to tell us your views.
