Rotherham Council and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive have highlighted a number of key locations along the corridor that could benefit from further improvement.
For each suggested location, a number of improvements will be considered. This includes:
You can learn more about the current problems that road users experience when travelling along the corridor by clicking on the different areas shown on the map below. The key problems for each location have been highlighted and suggestions have been made about how each area could be improved.
Whinney Hill
Congestion often builds up on Doncaster Road by Whinney Hill in Thrybergh. This is due to merging traffic at the bottom of the hill from Oldgate Lane and Magna Lane. These two junctions are becoming increasingly difficult to access due to the traffic flow on Doncaster Road. In the morning rush hour, traffic will start to significantly build up on Oldgate Lane and Magna Lane. Junction alterations will be looked at to make sure this situation is improved along with the potential to give buses additional priority.
Mushroom Roundabout
In peak rush hour periods and at busy times over the weekend, delays often build up on all of the entrances to Mushroom Roundabout. In particular, Fitzwilliam Road and Aldwarke Lane currently become very congested as they are main arterial routes for Rotherham town centre and Parkgate Retail Park. The local amenities at the roundabout, such as Asda and McDonalds, can also cause congestion around the area.
Improvements are going to be made to Mushroom Roundabout in September 2010. Please click here to find out more.
Fitzwilliam Road
Improvements to the road layout on the approach to St Ann's Roundabout will be looked at to further improve traffic flow and bus journey times.
College Road Roundabout
At present, College Road Roundabout operates signalised traffic lights at all entrances to the roundabout. Sometimes, in peak rush hour periods, buses leaving Rotherham Interchange (located just off College Road) are delayed. Bus priority measures are currently being investigated to improve bus journeys in and out of the town centre by this junction.
