South Yorkshire Policy...

The junction with Sandford RoadThe four councils in South Yorkshire (Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley) developed their second Local Transport Plan in partnership with the Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) and the Integrated Transport Authority (ITA). This plan is from 2006/07 to 2010/11 and defines the longer term vision for how transport improvements around South Yorkshire can help support the economic growth of the region.

In 2002 the Government agreed a set of ‘Shared Priorities for Local Government’. Four of these priorities were used to form the basis of the Local Transport Plan:

  • Congestion
  • Accessibility
  • Road Safety
  • Air Quality

As traffic volumes have increased in the region, with higher levels of economic activity and car ownership, there has been a fall in the number of people using public transport. This is a worrying trend which causes more congestion as more people use their own cars on a daily basis.

To help solve this problem, a South Yorkshire Congestion Strategy has been developed that recognises the need to control the rise in car use, and therefore help reduce congestion within South Yorkshire, particularly along key routes such as the A630.

The main focus of the strategy is to limit congestion by improving the quality of public transport within the region, and therefore encourage more people to use improved public transport.
