Background...
The Route
The A630 between Conisbrough and Doncaster is one of the most important roads serving Doncaster town centre and surrounding communities with up to 44,000 vehicles travelling along the route every day. The popularity of the route means it is often heavily congested, particularly during the morning and evening peak periods.
As well as congestion from regular traffic, on average, approximately 80,000 passenger journeys are made on public transport along the route each week.
Our Aims
Proposals to improve travel for road users along the A630 are part of a larger plan by the council and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) to improve travel links within the town.
We are looking to:
- Improve traffic flow along the corridor and reduce journey times for road users.
- Improve the reliability, punctuality and overall journey times of public transport.
- Improve passenger facilities and information, including RealTime information.
- Reduce effects on the environment and improve air quality.
- Provide improved facilities for pedestrians.
- Improve road safety.
Consulting with the public
In spring 2009 we first introduced plans to develop the A630 (Conisbrough – Doncaster) Smart Route. We began by asking members of the public for their views on current travel problems along the A630.
You told us that your highest priorities for the A630 were to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and improve road safety along the route.
You also took the opportunity to highlight specific locations along the A630 that needed particular attention when developing proposals. The most frequently mentioned locations were Warmsworth Road, and the A630 at it's junctions with Edlington Lane, Hall Flat Lane, Low Road (Conisbrough) and Sandford Road.
Over the following 12 months, using the feedback and comments we received during the first phase of consultation, the council and SYPTE developed a more detailed package of proposals for improvement at key locations along the A630.
These proposals were then presented to the public between March and April 2010, when we asked for your views on four key proposals for improvement:
- 83% of respondents were in favour of improving traffic signal timings along the route.
- 62% of respondents were in favour of replacing the existing subway at Sandford Road with a new pedestrian crossing.
- 53% of respondents were in favour of introducing a new peak-time bus lane between Hall Flat Lane and Sandford Road.
- 62% of respondents were in favour of providing two new pedestrian crossings on Warmsworth Road near to the busy A1 (M) roundabout.
Every comment received during the consultation was carefully considered as final proposals were developed.
